. I coulda told you about the rattle cans. Bad news. I painted my whole Jupiter with them

I had read in another thread you'd used them. I'm not going to lie... While I was spraying the consoles I was thinking " How the hell did this guy paint a whole boat with these damn things". Lol

Re: 197? SS Inside Out Restoration (New Title)

I really wanted to leave the splashwell in place on my Jet. Unfortunately, the only way I was going to get that transom out was to take the splashwell out first. Lord knows I tried.

Now I have a great excuse to cut that splashwell waaaay down before I put it back in.;)

Have fun dood!:D

I had to take my splashwell out as well to get my transom out of a 16' starcraft it ended up being worth it however because it exposed a lot of broken rivets in the stern of the boat and where the transom brace connects to the hull. like yours when i pulled the floor out of my boat the other day i found nearly all the rivets were broken off and the only thing holding (and holding it extremely well btw) was that spray in foam under each of the stringers between the ribs of the boat. I see people are trusting the HF riveters but is there a specific name or type of rivet I should be using for the thru-the hull stuff? I figured I'd go down to fastenal when I get close but after pressure washing the boat the other day I noticed that someone else has put in a bunch of pop rivets below the waterline on the port side and on inspection inside the hull they look like they were coated with 5200 or something but I'm wanting to take those out and put the kind of rivets that were originally in place.. Anyone have a better name or place to get the right rivets?? Also, I'm going to Gluvit the inside hull seams and all the rivets but is there a cheaper epoxy that I can seal the wood floors with instead of Gluvit?

Gluvit would not be a cost effective way to seal wood. Epoxy resin from clark craft, u.s. composites, etc would be better. Poly resin is cheaper but must be used with fiberglass.

Hit a homerun on a few goodies for the boat today! I picked up a Tempo 24 gallon fuel tank and a really nice SS steering wheel for just $40 in trade for pizza! The wheel is perfect w/o any dents/scratches and the tank just needs a good cleaning. I figure Ill wash the tank and let it sit in the sun for a few days before I install it.

Here are some pics

As for the sending unit, Im assuming the nut on top in the center is for pwr and the screw to the bottom left is for gnd? And can I also run the gnd from the filler neck to the sending unit gnd?

Wicked good deal on the purchase. I'm sure you can figure a way to make that tank fit.

I havent had a chance to work on the boat much this week, however I did get a few things knocked out. I finally reinstalled the floor with new floatation, cut and epoxied the new transom, wire wheeled the sides of the gunnals and sanded the splash well. Next week the plan is to reinstall the transom and paint the deck. Im having a bit of trouble with the TnT on the motor, while I have it off Im also going to have a look at it as well. Im not sure if Im having a electrical issue or if the pump took a dump? One thing I am sure of is its leaking from one of the lines...

Lookin better and better. You're making a lot more progress than me. Been lookin out the window all morning at snow coming down. My boats outside, and trying to wait for the transom to dry. Think it is now, but snow is coming down. depressed. You got a great deal on the wheel and tank. Keep up the good work. Did I say still snowing here, and the ground is mostly white.

Re: 197? SS Inside Out Restoration (New Title)

So after several hours of squeezing turning and banging my head against the wall, Ive decided to give the 24 gal. fuel tank the "Ole Spanish Archer"! For the life of me I wasnt able to get it to fit... So I did some searching this afternoon on CL and found a nice 22 gal. aluminum below deck tank. It fits well under the splash well and theres still plenty of room for the battery and access to the bilge. However Im still about 1.75" outside of the sliding doors, so it looks like Im stuck extending the doors about 2-2.5" into the cockpit ( no biggie) I can deal with a few extra hours of fab for decent increase in fuel! I was thinking about grabbing a few 1x3's and laminating together. Id then screw them to the cross member that is attached to the splash well and use L Channel to attach them to the gunnels. Then transplant the door track to the bottom of the 1x3's. This would not only solve my fitment issue with the fuel tank, but also strengthen the splash well cross member and solve the cracking issue that I discovered when removing the paint.

Also while on here Ive been doing a lot of research on painting. (Yippie...) Ive noticed quite a few people have tried to completly strip the paint off the hull without good results. Ive looked really close at the factory paint on my hull and have notice almost of it (98%) is in good sound condition, with some minor chipping in certain areas (not flaking). I was thinking about hitting it with some 220 to scuff it and head right to primer? Id pay special attention to the chipped areas but I really dont want the headache involved in stripping the entire hull to bare metal. What are thoughts of others????

Thanks!

If you just take off whats loose, or comes off fairly easy, you can paint over the existing paint. Saves a lot of hassles. You will need an aluminum primer for any bare aluminum, but regular primer will do the rest.

Yah, good plan. Just hit the bare spots with some self etching primer and game on!

Make sure you still prime the whole thing.

Any reason why Id need to use a etching primer? doesnt a wire wheel scuff the surface enough?

Thats the plan! How did the rustoleum pro primer work? Did it lay down nice?

Yah, regular primer/paint won't stick to bare aluminum. But, it'll stick to self etching primer;)

Re: 1972 SS Inside Out Restoration (New Title)

So I picked up my re upholstered bow cusions today, needless to say they are completly the wrong color! I ordered cream and I received beige... I had it out with the lady who made them and didnt get anywhere... I finally decided to just drop it and consider is a loss as I knew I was getting to the point where I was about to loose it.

I will post pics of them later tonight or tomorrow. I just need to cool off first! What a waste of $145...........

If anyone wants or needs them just pm me. Id rather take a loss and try to regain something, then nothing at all.

Re: 1972 SS Inside Out Restoration (New Title)

Spent about 5 hours on the boat tonight and made some good progress! I put the new transom back in, drilled all the holes and installed all the hardware minus the motor. I also made two additional braces for the knee support because the factory hole had torn. And lastly I sanded and primed the gunnels and deck!

All went fairly easy aside from actually getting the transom back into the boat. I struggled for a solid 30 min just to get it to slide down. I finally realized that the aluminum skin had streched due to the warped transom wood. Once I got that under control all it took was a few taps with a rubber mallet and she dropped right in! I'm going to have to add a few screws to the transom skin so it sucks into the wood nice and tight. As of right now its bowed out about 1/2".

Other than that things went like clockwork ! I'm going to shoot some topcoat tomorrow on the deck area, once that dries stuff can start going back into the boat!!!!!

Anyway, here are some pics

New knee brace reinforcement. The top 2 eyelets were completely gone, sheered off of the knee.
