Re: 1972 starcraft floor replacement

ok so I have to take all the foam out tomarrow. what is the best way to remove the foam? also I am having issues removeing throttle from side panel i removed handle and the chrome cover plate and the three screws and the thing is still hanging on there any suggestions?
Thanks jigngrub Its like one of those boats she looks great till you get within 10 feet then you see shes been rode hard and put away wet. But I got a good deal on her and always wanted a big well big to me aluminum boat. I saw potential and the room to do some of the ideas I have brewing. she runs great as long as your not afraid of playing with her knobs. I can't tell you how sick of rochester 2gc's I am. The last three boats I have had also had that same carb. Seems like you almost have to adjust the idle circuit every year. Sorry I am rambling tired I will give a update with more pics in the morning.

If you get a chance, toss up a pic of the remote. There are so many Merc controllers.

A pointed spade/shovel will remove large chunks of foam quickly, just like digging dirt.

Dirt - a proper term for soaking wet foam. :)

Hi MERIT. Are you certain that what you have is a 1972? If it is, I think it's already had a rebuild. I have a 1972 21' Holiday that didn't have pour-in foam and had a different paint and upholstery scheme. Also, your doghouse looks higher than the original. The windshield looks right though; it has gently curved glass like mine (I think they're the sharpest).
What does the ID tag tell you about the year and model? See 1972 Starcraft Holiday brochure here:

Re: 1972 starcraft floor replacement

Ok I need suggestion I have had my fill of shoveling foam. I can get most of it out but there is still alot of that stuff stuck to the aluminum and in the drain areas where water has to get through "small space under the ribs down the center of boat" and the gaps from the side to the middle where water needs to drain under the stringers. I tried acetone on a piece i had dug out with the shove it didnt disolve it or soften it. I am thinking of either a pressure washer or I dont know maybe a torch. help ideas please.

Re: 1972 starcraft floor replacement

Well today started out a major disappointment. I doug out my pressure washer from the barn and the connector for the gun hose was snapped off. So no pressure washer for me. So more chiping shoveling and just good old hard work. I was able to remove the controls and that side panel and the center support for the dash. most of the foam is gone the rest will go tomarrow. The hardest part is getting the foam out of the drain channels below the stringers and below the ribs in the center of the hull. Both were full of that pour in foam. I found a few spots that have me puzzled it looks like corrosion or maybe just some discoloration on the aluminum under the foam in spots and i have no idea from what. I did find three large carpenter ants in the boat I wish they ate foam.

Re: 1972 starcraft floor replacement

Where did you find enough epoxy to do an entire floor for only $50 bucks?? I thought that the cost was around $200 or so.

The wallet starts smokin' when you wet glass cloth with it.

I recall using over 3gal glassing the top/bottom of my last deck + a center console.

Hang in there! Once you get that crud cleaned-out, you'll be working with what looks to be a very good hull.

Looks like stains to me, Merit. Corrosion usually has a lot of pitting, which I don't see. Hit a spot or two with some sandpaper to see if it comes off.

Re: 1972 starcraft floor replacement

Thanks all. I forgot to give a summary of what I have spent so far. I am tring to stay in my budget of 600.00. I spent 127.19 on vinyl flooring. 50.19 on foam 122.56 on plywood 10.44 on some misc wood 38.59 on spar varnish 14.11 in misc ss bolts 10.67 in ss staples 13.91 in ss screws 20.97 in rivets and rivet gun. So thats 408.63 which means I have 191.37 to finish it.

Are you doing the transom? You're 2/3 through the budget and have all the major items. Might have some gas money left. :)

here's a "good" example of corrosion that was found under a layer of epoxy...the pitting was accompanied by alot of white dust.

....a few theories what happened here...I believe the PO coated with an antifouling epoxy which can contain copper

Thanks Bluefin there are a few spots that have some of that white dust but no pitting. I got all the foam that is comeing out out. got all the drain passageways clear. got my first two pieces of floor cut and varnished. with lots of cuts and a few blisters I called it a day

The "white dust" is a "good" clue regarding corrosion.

Re: 1972 starcraft floor replacement

I was thinking of putting in a ski/fishing pole locker in the center of the floor between the stringers you know typical place for ski locker with the floor only being 1/2 I am concerned that if I cutout for a 12 x 30 hatch that the floor will be weakened to much and may flex to much and cause other issues. I am thinking if I put it in I will need to put alum flat bar or angle stock around where the hatch will go but under the floor and tied to the stringers and then to the floor am I over thinking this or is it just a bad idea to put a hatch in the floor of one of these boats?
