I have a 1972 125 hp Johnson. I have looked over the manual but I think I am missing something. I want to know where the water comes out so I know the Impeller/water pump is working or not?

I do want to replace the impeller anyways just want to know what to look for.

Re: 1972 water pump not working

I have a 1973, 135hp Johnson but I dont have a manual. Where is the water suppose to come out? I am currently looking for a replacement impeller. Should I get a kit with the housing or do I just need the impeller? Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Re: 1972 water pump not working

The 125 (and 135) engines came out before OMC began installing the typical modern day telltale. On these early units, you can tell when the thermostat opens with your hand. Start the engine cold and hold your hand just behind the two exhaust relief ports at the top of the midsection, at the back. After about a minute, the thermostat (vernatherm) should open. When it opens, you will see small water droplets begin to form on the palm of your hand-when a very light mist comes out of those two ports. This is more a sign the stat is functioning properly, but it does show the water is circulating through the powerhead.

alfrmtn,

I just replaces the Impeller Everything else looked fine . The kit would have cost me over $100 vs the $28 for just the impeller. So I would dig in and see what needs replacing. If you don't need the impeller housing I wouldn't buy the kit. That's just me.

If the plastic housing is not deformed and if the stainless steel cup is not grooved, an impeller only should work out fine.

On the 1972 125 they do not sale the part#0314765 GUIDE, Water tube long. Is this very critical? if so what should i do?

If it's missing or damaged, no cooling. It's just copper tubing. Also, if the tube doesn't go into the pump outlet without messing up the grommet, no cooling. Other than that, it's no too important.

Your pump needs 2 guides, two grommets and two water tubes to work.
