Before someone gets cute and sends me a link to some site that sells books, allow me to explain. I have a 1972 65hp selectric evinrude. I just bought an online manual only to discover, MY MOTOR ISN'T COVERED!!!! What a waste of 30bucks! :mad:Why is this such hush hush info to get a simple fricken diagram? I can get wiring diagrams to airplanes online. But if you want to know how to hook up a stupid 5 wire ignition switch and a 5 lug selector switch, it's like applying for a home loan???

EDIT
thank you
Jason

Nothing hush-hush about it, Jason. Some people just ignore the consistent advice and try to get off cheap.

Get an original (or reprint) OEM factory Service Manual.

You don't want any links, so I won't offend you by giving you one.

Did you buy an OEM manual according to your model number?

Re: 1972 wiring diagram

This is a reaal common switch for OMC. The wiring diagram for any OMC 5 wire switch should work.

Re: 1972 wiring diagram

Thankyou! You did a fine job. This will help me wire my ignition switch. Do you know what wires connect to the bottom of the selectric switch. My manual only shows a 3 wire lug switch. (Must be for early 1972) Mine has 5 spade lugs on the bottom... The early 1972's had 3 wires I am learning..

To the guy above (Daviet).... The book was sold from 1960something to 1972. Hence I have a 1972 engine. The internet book was NOT sold based on model numbers. Looking through the archives, I'm NOT the first person either that has run into this issue with the online booksellers OR the first guy here on Iboats looking for the same info regarding selectric switch and 5 terminal ignition switch. ALso, the archives are littered with lot's of not so nice comments from high post users here regarding not being cheap about buying books. Doesn't give a new fellow a nice warm welcome feeling. I bought my book, as useless as it is for a LATE 1972 yellow matching plug 65hp Evinrude.

What I was trying to get across is if you purchase by the model number, manuals, parts or anthing else, you are going to get the proper part or manual. I don't think I have ever seen any manual that covers that many years to be complete, and have all the information in it.

Wrong. Are you aware of the penalty for copyright infringement??

Go find an OEM manual for your specific motor (make, year, model) on EBay. You can usually get them for about 20 bucks, mailing included.

BTW, "tude' may make you feel better when you are typing, but it won't get you much on these forums .... well, except for ignored, on ocassion.

Re: 1972 wiring diagram

Someone here was kind enough to send me a copy of the correct wiring diagram. Thank you!

Now to the benefit of those that will come behind me. Here it goes.

When dealing with a 1972, the manual may or may not be correct for your specific 1972 engine. There are actually 2 different selectric switches found on these remotes. From the top, they look the same. Flip it over and you will find out if it's an "early" 1972 or later 1972. The manual I bought online only provides the diagram for the "early" 1972. (BTW, I got my money back!)

The later 1972 switch actually has 5 posts found on the back of the switch. In addition, the ignition switch also has 5 posts on it too. I promised not to post this diagram on the web, but I will take the time to explain.

The 5 pole selectric switch is wired in this manner. If the lettering is worn off the rubber, peel it back, it's also stamped in white ink on the bottom of the switch.

1 - White wire and goes to S or ST on ignition switch
2 - White wire and goes to one side of starter solenoid
R - Blue wire and goes to reverse solenoid in gearbox
N - Green wire and goes to Neutral solenoid in gearbox
+ - (This has 2 wires on it)
- Purple/green and goes to #4post on terminal block on engine, then it
continues on to diode assembly
- Solid purple to ignition key.

Seeing this setup is different that what most of the peanut gallery has seen, here is the wiring also for the ignition switch too.;)
In order clockwise viewed from the back.

Batt - Battery red wire
M- Black/Yellow
S or ST - White
A - Has 4 purple wires
- purple to + on selectric switch
- purple to Choke switch
- purple to one side of the horn
- purple in main harness aft to terminal block #7

The individual choke switch style below the key gets the purple/white

I hope the helps someone out. I spent the last 2 days researching this and someone helped me. thanks for reading, if you have any questions, please PM me and I'll try to help where I can. (airplane mechanic here)

Re: 1972 wiring diagram

SHIFT SWITCH SOLUTION!!!!!

No more monkey motion with 2 switches.. Here's a GOOD fix. McQuay airconditioning makes a rotary switch that is PERFECT for us.
Here's the details.

Mcquay 057542901 - switch-rotary, 3pole, 4 pos (just dont use the 4th pos.

Other numbers on the box are L41-351 I got it from an AC part supply house.
Grab a knob from radio shack and mount it in a plate in the original spot where the old junk switch was.

BRILLIANT!!!!!!!
So if you have an original switch and think it's worth 400bucks......

THINK AGAIN!!!!!!!
Mine cost 35bucks and does the same job as OEM:D:D:D

Re: 1972 wiring diagram

You can also just use a simple double pole, 3 throw toggle switch for the hydro-electrics. Those are 10 bucks. A flip over safety cover is maybe 10 bucks more. The toggle with a momentary for reverse is even better.
