1973 115 Evinrude - overheated

Got the motor wired up and control cables hooked up. Sunday morning I fired it up on the muffs. The motor was still missing some, but I think it was flooding at the bottom carb. I shut everything off and checked it out, fired it back up, and proceeded to find out that the overheat alarm worked. I forgot to turn the water back on!!! So off came the lower unit and I had torn 2 vanes off the impeller. I'm waiting for it to come in now. Hopefully tomorrow.
Is there a way to flush the motor?

remove thermostats and flush. you can also attach a water hose to the water tube and run the motor, while the lower is off.

So, I can just push a garden hose onto one of the tubes in whats left of the lower end of my motor? Which tube? Left or right? I suspect one of the tubes is intake and the other is return? BTW I did turn the water on after I found the buzzer on. I started the motor and ran it for about 15 sec., twice, thinking it might start the cooling process, but then I remembered the manual saying even 5 sec. without water could toast the impeller. I gave up and tore it down.

One of the watertubes sends water to the top, the other returns it to the pump. Neither will gaurantee that the water will go through the engines cooling passages.

Service the thermostat (vernatherm), it's a more likely source of problems.

I managed to get it flushed out real good today. I'm still waiting on the impeller to come in.

Water pump kit came Thursday, it's installed and running again. I found out yesterday that my motor does not like ear muffs. The overheat buzzer went off again because it was not pumping water. I took the L/U off and tried the muffs again and there was no water getting to the pump. I cupped the ears and held them tighter to the water inlets and water showed up in the pump. I then started the motor and again held the muffs tighter to the inlets and a little spray/mist started to come out the 2 holes just under the cowling on the leg. (like it does while in the lake)
