Im new to the boating world and have a 1973 evinrude 135 starflite. The throttle appears to be original and is located on the left side of my seat. I recently replaced the old rusted throttle cables with new ones. The problem im having is when everythings back together I can shift forward and reverse but once I come back to neutral from reverse I cant get it to go back at all. Im finding the gear doest return to where the shift side can catch the gear again once im going from reverse to neutral. Can anyone help maybe someone has run into to this too???? Im going to post some pics of the parts a.s.a.p.

Im also going to be buying a repair manual for this engine. Anyone recommend a certain brand???

THANKS

It sounds like you need to adjust the cables to get rid of the backlash....the cable wont return the lever to the same position with backlash in the cable.

thanks mrcj011 your responce got my mind ticking and I figured it out. :D

For anyone that runs into this problem heres all I did..

Theres a piece that you take off the old cables and use on the new ones which connects to the end of the cable to where it mounts to the levers by the motor. All I did was remove those peices from the end of the cables and switched them. After remounting everything it worked perfectly.

Hope it might help somone else..

www.outboardbooks.com

these are the genuine factory service books, the 3rd party books are not much cheaper but quite useless. Mine cost $48.

Installing control cables.

1. set controls in neutral and at idle.

2. manually make sure motor is in neutral and at idle.

3. on the motor end of the cable, is a trunion nut (adjustment nut) there is a retainer, on
the motor for the trunion nut remove the clip.

4. without moving anything on the motor, adjust the trunion nut (turning nut) so that
The nut sits in the retainer, and will connect to the motor.

5. connect the cable to the motor, reinstall the retainer clip.

Note: you adjust the cable to the motor, not the motor to the cable.
