I have inherited a 73 16' Chrysler Bass Pro and would like information regarding the rub rail. The boat is in reasonably good condition. After sanding and prep., I would like to paint above and about 6" below the rub rail. I may replace the rub rail insert if it doesn't respond to refurbishing. For painting, I don't see a reason to take the rub rail loose and it appears that masking the rail would be satisfactory, but this is my first experience with this so I thought I would get a few opinions about this. I will be filling several holes where hardware changes will be occurring topside and also sanding out spider cracks above the rail; hence the decision to paint rather than gel coat. Thanks for your help.

I don't see any reason why would you remove the rail just to paint above it and under it. Mask it really well and do your painting and removing the mask tape b4 the paint dries should be sufficient.

cpo1, how about popping up a picture or three of your project for all of us to see what you are working on. One thing we all like on these forums is pictures.

As far as the rub rail goes, if you can accomplish what you are wanting to do without removing it, go for it. And as far a the rub rail insert. I hope you can restore it because that insert is pretty expensive to buy. I guess they make it out of gold. Once you see the cost, you will think so as well.

Post those pictures. :thumb:
