I have 1973 Johnson with electric start. It started bogging at wot. I bought carb cleaner to spray in carb. Motor while running at slow speed stopped and would not restart. Checked spark and it is great even had a spark to ark off my finger. Gas is coming all the way through fuel pump.

I am using Champion J6C plugs. What is the gap suppose to be. Engine will fire when plugs are dipped in gas.

I appreciate the help!!!!!

If I have to take the 20 to the shop does anyone know of someone in Middle TN that will not bankrupt me.

Thanks!!!!! :):):):):):)

The only way to clean a carb is to take it apart and clean out the tiny passages and such with a tiny wire and carb cleaner and compressed air. Spraying carb cleaner in it while the motor is running is pretty much useless.
If it were me, I'd take my carb apart. One last thing, if you haven't checked the spark to see if it will jump a 1/4 inch gap with a nice blue snappy spark, then you need to. Also check the fuel lines and such for loose connections or cracks that might leak air.
Good luck,

Re: 1973 20 HP Johnson

Hey guys,

Interesting ordeal - Looked at the gas line on the tank and it was broken at the connect of the tank. Bought new gas line fired right up, but still not running right. This is really strange - took a phillips screw driver and placed it in the plug cap wire and the screwdriver was close to the plug and the engine fired off the screwdriver and wanted to run until I could not hold the screwdriver long. Placed the wire back on the plug and it would not fire. Did this 3 times and the same thing. I then cut the cap off the wire and placed the wire back on the plug and it would not fire. Why woud it fire off the screwdriver?????

Also there is metal shavings coming off the flywheel from the starter that has probably gotten into the carb. Wander how I can prevent this?????

Thanks!!!!!

It is the cadet again - When starting over adjusting the carb how many turns to you begin with. Does the carb only have the front rich and lean adjustment. Are the plugs suppose to be at .30. What would be better if it is not starting well?

Thanks,

Hate to say it, but I am going to chicken out on this motor repair. I know an honest older guy that does work at his home. I do plan on getting into this hobby and buy a motor as a project.

I am a duck hunter and boats with 18 to 35 HP sell like hotcakes. I train Retrievers professionally, web site www.cedargroveretrievers.com. Since having a couple of strokes it is more difficult to train dogs and I am not a sitting down type person.

I truly appreciate everyone's input!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
