1973-4 115 water discharge?

1973 or 74 evinrude 115hp outboard motor<br />looking to buy boat but a few questions first.where should the water discharge from? when the muffs are on there are two ports, one on each side of the prop, that the water comes out, but not above the water line. <br />also, the guy sprayed starter fluid in and it mixed with year old gas it started up but sputtered. after buying new fuel and oil, it started and ran (after the spray). sounded good. I'm still comcerned about the water discharge(or lack of) every other motor i have seen the discharge is above the water line. any help would be great

motor is too old for tell-tale late 70's and newer

On that year you will get water out of the two exhaust ports on the mid section not altot but if you put your hand there it will get wet. But if in doubt replace the water pump its cheap insurance.

thanks. <br />is it time to hang the motor up? it seems to run okay besides maybe the carbs needing to be cleaned. am i setting myself up for disaster?

Check the compression, that'll tell you if it's tired. But you can bet you'll kill it if you keep using starting fluid(ether) in it. There's no lube in ether and it will run your engine dry, not good.

I Have a 74 115 runs like champ just check compression and if thats good i would have no problems putting some money in it for water pump and<br />therms and carb cleaning.

thats what i was thinking. 1000 for 20ft grady (boat motor and trl) very clean very solid. hoping to get a season out of it at least. new to outboards though,
