Hi all,
Yet another newbie here...sorry. My 65 HP was running very well this afternoon but it lost power, sounded like there was "metal on metal" happening and then it quit. I took off the cover and it was scorching hot. Now, I'm not very boat-related mechanically inclined (first boat owner in my family) but can handle a wrench or two. Does this set off any bells for anyone? Are there a couple of things you would start with?

The motor will turn over if I let it set and cool down if that helps...
Thanks

Sounds like it badly overheated and seized.
It may have survived.
First thing is to run a compression check, to make sure you didn't lose a cylinder and/or head gasket.
Second thing is to find out and fix the cause of the overheating.

You did mix oil in the gas?

The gas was supposedly mixed per my wife. I am now having my doubts. Thanks for the reply...I'll give it a look-see.

Is there anything that ya'all would replace right away on this since I'll have it apart? Any sure-fire needs on this old dog? It hasn't had any work done in about 5 years...except for changing the lower unit oil 2x per year. I usually get out with it about 30 times/year so it sees a bunch of water time...

Take the head off, and take a look at the cylinder walls to see if they are smeared with aluminum. That should tell you what you want to know. Take a look at the gas to see if it is discolored from having oil added.
