Hello all. my 9.5 from time to time will slip out of gear while I am throttling up. I am going to check linkage, shaft connector, and then clutch dog. to check linkage I should just adjust shift handle to where it is going slightly more into forward right? If it turns out I need to replace the clutch dog how long should it take to replace and also are there any special tools needed. Also, is there any hidden secrets or special things I should know do replace the clutch. (stuff learned through experience). I just bought the motor and doesn't look like it has been run much at all. it runs very well except for the slipping issue.

Thanks for the help,

Doug

Clutch dog and fwd gear at a minimum. A shop manual makes it a fairly easy job.

Thanks Wilde,

Anyone know about how long it takes to change the clutch and gear out?

Thanks

Before you tear into the gearcase, make sure that both sections of the shift rod are fully inserted into the shift rod connector so that the screws firmly hold at the beveled sections of each part.

It is necessary that the screws be completely removed to correctly mate with the recessed area.

Thanks ezeke,

I'll doublecheck the connection. Do you know how long the clutch takes if I do need to replace it?

Thanks

It can take half a day the first time you do one if you include putting it back together, filling the gearcase and testing. You usually need a hand impact tool to get the skeg off. You might as well buy the seal kit and do that while you have it apart, and you don't know until you get inside if its just the dog or not. It is much easier if you have the service manual and the parts manual to guide you.

The shift detent is built into the gearcase on that motor. So, if it "clicks" into both gears it should stay there unless the dog and gear are worn out. You could take the linkage and stuff clear out and throw it overboard and it would stay in gear once it "clicks". Unless the dog & gear....

How long would it take you or me? I could repair and reseal the whole thing in an hour. Might take you a few days longer, depending.

Re: 1973 9.5 slipping out of gear

good deal. It does click into both gears well. I will do the seals while I'm in there, good idea. I have already had the foot off when I replaced the impeller. It came off very easy. I will recheck the linkage again. I was pretty careful when I put it back together but never hurts to check again. Sometimes it will push along greeat and then other times it will slip out to where I have to bring it back to idle and try to run it up slowly. If i just give it throttle quicker it slips out.

One more question, What brand are the outboard manuals for my engine on marineengine.com? I can purchase the manual there but it doesn't say if it's Seloc or another brand. I would like to get the original service manuals not the aftermarket from what everyone on here is saying.

Thanks again for the help. This site is outstanding!!
