Hey, no worries! I had thought I had them gapped correctly, and I had skimmed across a website out in the wild, wild Internet which stated that point gap just had to be close, not very exact! So I was writing it off as not the problem as well! Then I think it is in the manual, or another website which states being off by 0.0015 on your point gap can change the timing as much as 2 degrees! Sure enough, that did the trick!
So, to recap, for anyone reading this post for information:
Motor died on hole shot, after running good.
Would not start after.
Discovered low compression in bottom cylinder, heavy carboning due to wrong plugs/wrong ignition. Possibly other causes as well.
Timing appeared off.
Starter had issues at this time as well.
So, replaced starter, condenser, ignition coils, spark plugs.
Had trouble getting engine to time properly, turned out to be the point gap, reset, all good!
Cleaned all the carboning out with deep creep. Re-torqued head bolts to proper spec.
Most importantly, got some great help from the good people on this forum!
Thanks again everyone! Happy boating!
