The motor must be in neutral and the control arm must also be in the neutral position.

You need a powerful fully charged battery to turn the 300 RPM necessary for the ignition system to fire.

Try disconnecting the large red plug at the engine and jumping the starter directly at the engine. You will have to manually choke the engine to stop it if it starts with the harness disconnected.

The following is good for any motor that is new to you: http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=158086

Be sure to have adequate cooling water to the engine whenever you run it, even for a few seconds.

Use 87 or 89 US Octane and TC-W3 oil, mixed 50:1.

You may want to invest in an original factory service manual for your engine. You can get one from Ken Cook Co, in Milwaukee. Or they are on the web. It's esp helpful when you get into ignition issues.
