I have a 1973 Evinrude 135. Ive been working on stuff on the boat so it has sat for just over a month. I went to turn the steering wheel today on the trailer and its stuck. Cant turn at all. I checked the cable and for anything causing it to be stuck. I also greased the nipples on the steering shaft buy the engine. lol cant help it. Anyone know hot to break it loose? Or can anyone tell me whats going on?

Thanks

Try disconnecting the cable from the engine and see if the engine turns freely. Check that nothing (nut, washer) has not fallen into the mechanism either at the helm or at the engine. If there is no mechanical blockage, the cable maybe stuck in the tube at the engine. The nipples you greased might just be for the engine pivots. I just went through this with my 60 hp Johnson. I had to drive the cable end back through the steering tube, clean out the old grease and corrosion, then re-grease and reinstall.

I had a 135 Evinrude for a number of years and I had to free up the tube back where it comes out of the cable on more than one occasion.

it is called preventive maintainance. the tilt/steering tube has to be cleaned periodically. the grease zerks on the front are for the tilt, does not grease the cable.

Thanks for the responce..

I losened the steering cable and pulled it out as far as i can get it not all the way out. On the other side theres the rod that hooks up to the engine. I hit that and got it to move in. But its still stuck. If i remove the pivot tube does the engine have anything else holding in place.???????????

Disconnect the engine steering rod from the end of the cable. The cable end slides back and forth inside the pivot tube (which is a piece of pipe). The pivot tube should stay in place as you push/pull/pound the cable end out through the tube. The engine pivot on the tube (hence the name)

Re: 1973 evinrude 135 Steering is stuck?????

Im going thru the same problem. I pulled the tube out of the pivot casing but its lodged and wont move an inch. Im not sure where to grease the tube to get the bar to go in and out of its self. It looks almost like a hydraulic tube but there are no hydraulics on this boat. The bar is stuck out of the caseing and had a lot of rust on it so I cleaned it and lubed it but nothing. The steering wheel is also stuck with minimal play but nothing is happing on the end of the steering bar. Can someone help?

I had the same thing happen to my old 82 Mercury I ended up cutting the cable and replacing everything , my mechanic has a small hone and hones the tube to be sure they dot stick and I never had one stick again.

Re: 1973 evinrude 135 Steering is stuck?????

I have been at this point for 2 days now...trying not to destroy an 89 Evinrude 70hp steering cable that is stuck. Same as everyone else...engine turns when disconnected, cable extends on starboard cable side with cable bolt loosened...but cable is jammed solid at port side/steering linkage end...have tried PB Blaster, heat, Kroil, ..even set up a Rube Goldberg extractor with chain and nuts and bolts to try and pull the tube. no budge. Any other suggestions on any other ways to loosen the tube? PS I did aappreciate the bolt protection idea for the linkage hole...I can really bash with impunity now :D
