I recently purchased this 73 Evinrude 25 and took it out today. Motor runs great, starts fast, but, after pulling out, I noticed the hood was very warm. Pulled the hood and there was (some) steam rolling off the motor. Seemed to be pumping great while running, but it was also very hot to the touch. Brought it home and pulled the thermostat out and it was bone dry inside. Could have evaporated I guess, but I had the thermostat out about 30min after pulling it out of the water. What could cause this??? Thanks B.C.

Seeing as how you recently purchased the motor and it overheated on the first outing......I would definetly replace both the wtr pump and t-stat regardless of how it was pumping. Don't take the chance of ruining the purchase. If there is a problem after the replacements, then we can go deeper.

Pulled impeller today and it was very dry rotted and one of the ears or flaps had broken off and was wedged into one of the small holes in the cup. If had to guess I would say this was blocking the water flow. Going to install a new impeller and thermostat tommorow. Maybe this will fix my problem. Thanks Again
