The timing is controlled by the point gap. Which should be set at .020". OMC made a special timing fixture that you can use to set the points with using an Ohm meter to get them more exact than just setting them with a feeler guage. You can also use a timing light to check them. there are marks on the flywheel and on the armature plate that will line up for the top and bottom cylinders if the points are set right. These marks are cast in to the bottom rim of the flywheel and stamped into the armature plate.

Thanks Alot, I have already gapped the points so maybe I'm good. Another question, On the points there is the slotted screw to adjust the points and the Philips head screw that I guess actually holds the points down to the armature plate. Is the slot screw the only screw involved in setting the points, because the slot screw seemed to move very easily and the philips screw was tight. Just seems to me that they could get out adjustment very easily. Thanks

It's just that one screw that holds them in adjustment. There's a little spring under the slot screw that keeps it from vibrating around, but I doubt that does a lot since there's a good deal of play between the point and the head of that screw anyway. They seem to stay pretty good though.

Here's a pic of the marks wbblc87 is talking about though, if you want to check (from a 28hp):

But timing doesn't have to be deadly on these at all. .020" point gap is just fine.
