Don't feel bad, I'm crash coursing on a 1971 25hp Evinrude myself. These fellers here are great.....have give you some good advice from what I've read so far. Let me suggest a couple more things if you decide to pull that flywheel off. (oh yeah....you can get the key at NAPA for about $1.00. They will have an assortment....you'll need to get the right one.)
Anyway, while you have that flywheel off.....I would pull the points off for inspection.....maybe take a points file and lightly clean the contact surface's up a bit. Reset the points at .020. While there, also check that the coils are not rubbing the flywheel....you can loosen the screws and back them up a little if they are. Also, when you place the flywheel back on, be sure that the crankshaft and inside part of flywheel is clean and dry. If you oil it up it will shear another key pretty quick.
BTW- you get that thing running, you will have a great motor. These were made fairly lightweight for the power.....I think mine weighs about 65 lbs. Try finding another 25 hp that weighs that light. At $125 I would say that you ain't hurt at all. The thing would scrap out in parts on ebay for over $300. There's a couple hundred dollars just in the lower unit gears if they're in good shape.
