G'day
I've a 1973 evinrude 50hp that refuses to rev. It runs as smooth as silk up to about 2500 revs at 10 knots on a 16ft half cab fibreglass boat. But at full throttle it coughs and actually runs slower than at three quarter throttle. It chews the juice up at about 20 litres (5 gallons U.S.?) per hour. No suspect noises and good compression. Any suggestions fella's.

gazzman,

Buest guess, you're running on one cylinder at above idle speeds.

Two things to check.

1. Do you have spark on both?

2. Does it help to squeeze the primer bulb?

I think you have a carburetor problem on one of your two carbs.

yep it sounds like a carb is clogged . i have first hand experince with the 50 hp 73 . if carb is not putting gass in it will gauld that cylinder . the high speed jet will stop up if left with gass in it for a long period . it is in the lowest part of the bowl .i have pulled the drainplug ran a wirein throug it in to the highspeed jet. the last time i used a old spinner bait . it worked till i could git home and clean them better. have 3 of those babys :D
