I recently bought a 1973 Glastron CV-16 and am beginning the resoration process. I joined this site looking for a similar project to follow for advice that has already been done. If anyone can point me in the right direction I would greatly appreciate it! I will keep this thread and post pictures along with questions throughout the process if all of you knowledge guys wouldn't mind helping me out!

Thanks,
Cam

CamCobalt welcome aboard !
Not sure if there is the same Glastron restoration project thread here or not ... There are a ton of Glastron threads though .. Maybe use the the search function or google it and and add iboats to the google search ..
But it is a glass boat and they are all pretty much the same as far as construction goes .. So post up some pics and start digging in !

Do a search of the restoration forum. There have been a few Glastron 16 restorations, that you can browse through.

There are lots of good information and advise here. I'm currently rebuilding my Bayliner. I probably wouldn't be trying too without all the info and videos in the forum

I read through the few restoration I found,

However I am having trouble physically making a list of what needs to be done and what materials/how to do it
I have watched some youtube videos of your typical old fiberglass restorations as well and have gained some knowledge but i still do have quite a few questions.

I will post them in a list and if anyone can answer of them please do I appreciate it!

Here is the google photos album

1) My stringer (single stringer) is in good shape. I am not replacing it and am wondering why people completely grind down all the fiberglass on the hull. I was not planning on doing this but I don't exactly know why people do this.

2) I am planning on binding my plywood with 1708 fiberglass and then I believe using 1.5 chopstrand ontop so that I will be able to paint the fiberglass for my deck (Im not planning on installing carpet or anything)

3) is the resin I'm supposed to be coating the new plywood deck with the same as I will be using to harden the 1708 fiberglass cloth?

4) I am planning on (after the deck is re-fiberglassed) drilling some holes and filling the hull with foam - I don't know what type of foam or anything to use and there's so many different opinions on whether it's needed or not

5) I am also clueless on the exterior of the boat. I was going to sand it down to the paint (remove the gelcoat). Then do I simply repaint it like this?

6) When painting the deck...It is possible to paint the rough fiberglass if sanding and then priming it? Or is the 1.5 chopstrand required to give it a better look?

1 - You have to tab in the new supports, and you should grind the old fiberglass to give the new tabbing a good surface to grab onto. My boat has 5 stringers with maybe 12" between each stringer. If my 2nd layer of tabbing on the stringers extends out 6", then adjacent stringers would have tabbing that touches, thus the full grinding of the hull.

2 - didn't see a question, but that sounds OK. Make sure you fully cure your final layer of glass, unless you meant to say gelcoat instead of paint.

3 - Yes.

4 - I used 2-part polyurethane expanding closed-cell foam (2-lb density). You'll want to use a closed-cell foam.

5 - How bad is the exterior? If it's just oxidized, you may be able to wet sand and buff to restore the look.

6 - I'm no pro, but I think the point of the CSM is to give you something to sand besides the biaxial cloth. Sanding into the cloth cuts the long glass strands, which is where the strength comes from. Again, I would consider looking at rolling on gelcoat - it fills the glass in very well in just a few coats.
