Hello, I took the bonnet off my '73 Johnson 20 hp (20R73A) this weekend and found the black nylon lockout lever, shoulder bolt, and spring clip laying in the bottom of the case. Nothing appears broken, but for the life of me I cannot figure out how to reinstall it. I've looked at the parts diagram and scoured this forum trying to find pictures to help. Can someone please point me in the right direction?

I ordered the manual, but it won't be here for several days and I would like to take the kids out this weekend. Any help is greatly appreciated.

I assume the bolt backed out while at the lack recently.

Thank you,
Robert

is this the lever that prevents it from being started in gear?...if so, just leave it off for now and start the motor in neutral....it won't affect the running of the motor...just make sure you're the one operating it and are aware that it can be started in gear

Re: 1973 Johnson 20 Lockout Lever Installation

Thank you both for replying. This is the lever that keeps it from starting in gear. I found out it was the LockOut Lever from the parts diagram. I cannot seem to figure out from the images on the parts diagram or the photos of other outboards available of how to install it an have it funtion.

The issue is that there is a spring that is supposed to engage something, and I cannot seem to figure out the mechanics of it. Attached are pictures of the parts. Based on the parts diagram, I believe I have all the pieces, but cannot seem to figure out the puzzle. I would like to have it installed to prevent myself from making a stupid mistake....

Re: 1973 Johnson 20 Lockout Lever Installation

try the diagram at marineengine.com..you model no.,, exhaust housing..#'s 34, 32, and 50...assemble it in that order and orientation...move the shift lever while holding light pressure on that curved black plastic arm, #61, that comes from the area where your pieces attach...do you see how it links to your arm to prevent the flywheel from turning if the engine is in gear and if there is no pressure on it then you can start it in gear?...a picture is worth a 1,000 words as they say....I have had limited success studying engines for sale on ebay or craigslist to answer linkage, etc. questions of my own...sorry I can't offer more help

Thank you again for the feedback. I will try to follow your instructions tonight. I found the same numbers you were referring to and here is the diagram I was using. In the event anyone else wants to chime in, I am all ears. Thank you again!

I just picked up a '77 9.9 for rebuild this morning and thought I saw it on there. I'll know tonight and take some pics when I reassemble in the afternoon.

Here's the lockout mounted on the '77 9.9.

Sorry it's not real clear. I was trying to get the tear down done quickly. I have to get the rebuild done in a day if I'm going to make any money on it.
