with that being said, the spit, I can almost guarantee that would be the problem.

Carbs are engineered where the gas to air ratio is delicate and everything has to be in sync for it to work properly.

let us know...

Re: 1973 Johnson 9.5 hp carb rebuild

OK changed the fuel line and it got rid of the coughing... but it still only runs under full choke. At least the fuel pump works.. and the coughing is gone thats great. So I bet a piece of that old fuel line got caught in the carb. Im going to soak it in some carb cleaner and I got some compressed air to blow though it. There are some small plastic bushings on the carb that might be tough to get off, they are for the choke valves. Should be ok if I only soak it for 20-30 minutes.

We'll see.. thanks for the help. Sorry about hijacking this,, Should I start my own thread?

Cleaned the carb again and soaked it in cleaner, blew it out and now its running like a champ. I think the key is using compressed air.

Thanks guys

I have the same motor and it will only run for about 10 seconds if I pour gas into the top of the carburetor but will not run at all any other way all fuel lines are clear it has good spark and good compression and I cleaned the carb with carb cleaner and compressed air any ideas

Look for a little box top of the page and start " new topic " all for your motor for the best help.
