Hi I have a 1973 johnson 65 hp , I just rebult one of the pistons, got a new head gasket. Runs great.
About a week ago I pumped up the primer bulb too much. And now everytime I start it there is gas/oil floating to the top of the water. It is in the lake And I hate to pollute, but I cannot figure where oil or gas is comming from it appears to be below the water line. Any idea.
Thank you
jon

The piston was not melted it had broke a ring and damaged piston and left gouges on the head and I bleive the oil/gas is comming out of the bottom , As soon as I get her out of water in 2 days, I will check the bottom end oil for water. But I you say I should rebuild carbs and ect. I will that this winter while she is out of water

If you did not rebuild the carburetors, you are kidding yourself. You'll have the same failure that melted one piston.

Rebuild the carbs. While you're at it, rebuild the fuel pump with new kits that are alcohol resistant.

All the hoses (fuel) are suspect too.

Totally agree with DJ. Many people don't realize that the fuel has changed so much over the years the old hoses and pumps were not made for today's fuel and additives.

Thank you for welcoming me to the forum, mabey sometime I will tell you how I broke sterring cable, and was able to repair it by welding it, and the piston in the motor I used was a used one off ebay. For $15.00 including shipping and the guy through in alot of extra parts wirstpins, bearings ect.:)

And if you're really worried about polluting, change your 2 stroke oil to fully synthetic tcw3 oil that's biodegradable. That's all I use. You can get a gallon of the Penzoil at Walmart for $23.

Everyone I've ever talked to has scoffed at the use of Penzoil outboard oil . . . is it just a an unwarranted stigma (like Bayliner boats), or is the synthetic a much better product?

It leaves less oil marks on the water and smokes less. As for it's actual performance vs. other tcw3 I have no idea. I personally don't see a performance difference. But I only have older smaller engines. If there was a problem, there'd probably be a class action suit out there already!
