1973 jonhson 65 horse

oh boy ,had the boat out on Friday and when i throttled up no go ,engine revved but no forward movement,throttled down and started to move again,whats going on! pulled motor out of the water and no weeds around the prop,so i tried throttling up again and no go throttled down and got it to work but it would only go very slowly,any ideas spun prop ,stripped gears??????

check for spun prop. especially if it sounded like a clutch slipping on a manual trans car. draw a line across the hub, and see if they are still lined up afterwards.

should i do this even though itll move the boat??? and can i do this out of water
