I am attempting to do a complete tuneup on my 73 Merc 650 (ser #3664924 with thunderbolt ignition) and I am unclear on how to align the timing belt. I know that the flywheel needs to be at TDC and then I remove the timing belt pulley and belt and then align the cast tab on the pulley with a 'raised area' on the distributor adaptor. In the attached picture, I think that I need to align tab A with the raised area B. Is this correct? The two manuals I have, Seloc and Clymer, are both vague on this.

Thanks,
Dave, the reluctant mechanic. (I'd rather be boating!)

Re: 1973 Merc 650 Belt Timing

I figured it out. The timing tab should be pointing to the line on the flywheel to the left of the label 'Belt Alignment Mark'. At that point, the tab on the timing pulley (A in the picture) should be directly over the raised area on the top of the distributor adaptor (B in the picture).
