1973 merc/ having problems

i just bought a early 70's merc 115 . it had the rotor broken off , so i replaced it and the racer berings (i have a shop man.) i reinstalled the dist. , and have it running . now i have to sync. the timming and the carbs.and im at a loss .is there a way to do this with the engine not running , ive had a couple machanics tell me thats the best way , but i cant find any imformation on how to do it and they wont tell me how.

thank you very much, that helps alot . when i got my motor to start .the rpms started to stediley increase . what causes this ? is it because the motor isnt timed yet? or the carbs arnt adjusted right.i just put a rebuild kit in them and im not sure if i got ll the linkage back right, any help would be greatly appiciated .
