1973 Merc Pre-Alpha Drive Water Pump Help

I am on the fence about replacing the lower housing of the water pump. If I do I will have to order the part. If I don't I can get the lower unit put back together. The problem is that it looks a bit melted. I could sand off what looks bad taking a bit off of the entire surface. Am I asking for trouble doing this?

Ayuh,.... Welcome Aboard,.... Ya, that needs Replacin',.... it's Beat,...

It contains the seals that separate the water from the oil,....
