I JUST BOUGHT A 1973 115 MERCURY DOES IT HAVE A THERMOSTATE YES OR NO IF SO WHERE IS IT LOCATED PUTTING NEW GASKETS ON CANT FIND ONE ANYWHERE

There is no thermostat on your 73 115. It will take all the water you can give it. make sure your impeller is changed as well. If you just got the motor there is likely more than just gaskets going on. Make sure you check all the wiring for crumbly rubber insulation. Before you go too far you should do a compression check. on all six cylinders.

I recently aquired a '72 merc 1150. dave is giving you good heads-up on issues exactly like i ran into. No T- stat, check the internal wiring harness, if it's original the jacketing is probably shot, as for the water pump, my impeller was good but, the upper and lower housing seals were wiped away..take my advice, change as parts as you can in each particular catagory..don't do half the job! There is many topics under my posts..'72 merc 1150

thanks ,this engine runs great and i will install new water pump.iam redoing gaskets because somebody put red sealer on them and it looks bad.i thought go ahead and redo gaskets now and it should run for awhile to come.looks like someone just rebuilt this engine because pistons are as clean as new.
