You just got this thing. Do yourself a favor, give the thing a complete tune up. Plugs, wires, cap, rotor, points, condenser. Get a new inline fuel filter for the carb inlet and replace the fuel water separator filter, hopefully you have one. Start fresh with it. Believe it or not, years ago, before cars had fuel injection and 100,000 mile spark plugs, tune ups are part of routine maintenance. This isn't throwing parts at it, its maintenance. Make sure the firing order is right, point gap and dwell are correct and timing is correct. You can't tell by looking at it.
