1973 starlite 135 warning horn

I just brought a 135 Starlite on a 16 ft Tri Hull. Of course the previous owner said everything was working great the last time he took it out. I started it up with the muffs on and I did not hear any warning horn. I have read in the posts that it should have had a warning horn beep for over heating. I have also read that they might not sound on older models. Which is correct? I noticed only one tan wire coming off of the cylinder, not one for each one. Am I missing something?

The warning horns with the initial test beep don't come into being until 1989. You have only one temperature switch which is located in the starboard cylinder head.

The tan wire has a disconnect a few inches from the cylinder head which you can reach by sliding the tube away from it.

If you turn the ignition switch to the run position and ground the control end of the tan wire to the engine block, the horn should sound.

I have a warning horn also, but I installed a simple temp guage so I can see the readings of the motor instead of just relying on the warning horn.

OK, found everything and disconnected the tan wire and touched it to the block with the key in the on position. Nothing. Where is the horn located? in the control box? Does adding a temp gauge mean drilling into the block? That would be something for another time.

You can get temp gauges with a sensor that goes under a head bolt.

But fix that horn. A horn will get your attention, wheras a guage is fine if you look at it. Yes the horn is in the control. You can have both a horn AND a guage, y'know.

Be sure that the section of wire that you ground is the control end, not the sender end.

OK, I thought I would start by opening the control box and seeing the horn. To my surprise I could get the lower part off ( 3 screws), but the top part won't come off. I looked underneath and there were 2 wires wrapped in electrical tape. One was tan and the other was dark purple. Both had leads on them so they must go somewhere. I thought I saw that the horn is in the upper half of the control box, is that correct? I hate when someone jury rigs something instead of fixing it the right way. For a project in the fall I will probably rewired the boat, but for now I don't want to bring it out on the water without this horn. Any suggestions?

The horn should be attached to the purple wire from the ignition switch for positive voltage and to a tan wire leading through the main harness to the temperature switch which will ground the horn if the engine overheats.

There should be a gray wire taped off inside the control for the tachometer signal.

When I click on the thumbnail it too blurry to read. If I can't get the control body off all I have to do is hook a horn to the purple and tan wires to get a warning system?
