I just change the water pump. I can't get it to go completly into reverse. The prop turns just a little but makes a clanking noise all the time like it is not all the way in reverse. It goes forward ok but feels like it jumps into gear. What could I have done wrong or could there be a problem with the lower unit?

sounds like the shift linkage spline is off location.
towards the front of the lower end is where the linkage spline connects.
you most likely will have to drop the lower end and check the allignment of this spline...but check the cable adjustment first.

another tip is before droppling the lower unit put it in forward.

I'm going with the fact that you are off one to two spline teeth when you put it back together. Had you had other problems you would have had them prior to the disassy.

Put the remote in N. With the lower unit dropped enough to get to the shaft, carefully rotate the shift shaft through it's range, while turning the prop (to get R gear to mesh in particular) and mark the max excursions.

Set the shaft in the center of the marks and reassemble.

there are 6 splines on the shiftshaft being off by one makes problems . do what tex said . put the lower in neutral . center your upper shiftshaft it neutral . spin the prop to see if you got it

also make sure you poke up the rest of the hardware on the upper shift shaft those nylon peices where the lower and upper shaft connect

I tried all that was suggested. I even manual tried putting it in gear when i did that it felt like it was closer to getting in reverse. What nylon pieces are you talking about?
