really, really dumb question
son has bought the above motor, which came with two props,
he wants to put the better one on it,
doesn't have a manual,
has taken the split pin out, what else is holding the hub/dome on?

should he just whack it? :D

TIA for the advice on the proper way to remove it,
cheers

Re: 1974 120hp Chrysler Prop question,

That prop is an 18 spline drive pin prop. The tailcone holds the drive pin. You remove the cotter pin and unscrew the tailcone. The tailcone should have a rubber O ring inside it so it doesn't rattle on the propshaft. Then, the drive pin will either fall out of the hub (if it is vertical) or you will need to push it out. After pushing out the pin, slide the prop off the shaft. BE CERTAIN to replace the pin when you put on the newer prop. This pin locates the prop on the shaft and keeps it from hitting the lower unit housing. You can make new drive pins out of long 5/16 stainless bolts by cutting off the head and threads. If you have access to stainless rod, cut a piece to the proper length--slightly longer than the diameter of the hub but still able to fit within the tailcone. DO NOT cut it shorter than the hub diameter. DO NOT use steel or brass. Steel will rust and brass is not strong enough.

When you replace the tailcone, screw it far enough down so the drive pin is fully covered andf the O ring is compressed a bit, but not so far down that the holes in the tailcone do not line up with the hole in the prop shaft. Use a stainless 1/8 inch diameter cotter pin about 2-2 1/2 inches long to secure the tailcone
