I was hopeing someone might have some experience with these motors. I m wondering if anyone is running one and what there setup is and what they are getting out of it. I am running a 1974 135 evinrude with a 13 3/4x15 hustler alum prop and getting a top speed of 40mph at 5600rpm on a 1993 astro 17' bass boat with a 6" setback jack plate. I have the vent plate set at 3" above the keel. It doesnt vent except in hard wide open turns. The motor came with a 13x19 non cupped prop that it would only spin up to 5k at 38mph (I put a cupped one on it and got 40mph at 4800). I dont want to go broke ordering props so any help would be great.
All speeds are gps.

Wolf, If I were you I would just stick with the 15" hustler you have on the boat now, as the RPM are almost perfect. A SS prop would get you some more speed but you may have to try a couple of them to get the very most out of your boat.

Re: 1974 135 evinrude

I like what Im getting out of it for the lake Im on most of the time. It allmost jumps out of the water getting on plane and reaches top speed in seconds. It doesnt over rev but I should be getting WAY more speed out of it. A modern 135 will push my hull to about 57. The 90 that was on it before would do 45 (empty). Is it possible that the 19p was keeping the motor from reaching max hp and that a 17 would get it done. For some reason the factory testing on my boat shows that a 115 merc will do 47 and a 135 merc will do 63 (big jump). These are speeds with the boat empty and one person in it. I would be happy with 45 loaded as I have been told that this old motor should put out about 115 at the prop.

Your motor might be a little tired. When was the last time it had a thorough tuneup? one that starts with a comression check. Also check to see if the timing is fully advancing and that the throttle plates in the carbs are opening fully

Re: 1974 135 evinrude

Ok, what the heck is going on here! I just came back from the lake with my new 13 3/4x15 hustler. When I put it in gear it shook pretty bad and wanted to stall the boat. When I hit the throtle it started on plane then vented like crazy. It hooks up as soon as it gets on plane then reaches a top speed of 36 mph at 5000 rpm. After messing around with it for an hour I put it back on the trailer and put the old beat up prop back on. And it ran as it should. This new prop is junk. $100 gone for nothing. I cant see anything wrong with it. Any idea about a GOOD prop I can put on it when I can save up another hundred?

In the first post you say that the Hustler does 40 MPH at 5,600 RPM, and in the last post you say that it now only does 36 MPH at 5,000 RPM.

If this truly is the case, then you have a MOTOR problem at this time and NOT a PROP problem, get the motor fixed and then come back and we will get you fixed up with a better prop.

Sorry, the first post was incorrect. I have an old 13 3/4x15 that is beat up and has chunks missing, that is what I was, and am now running. I had just ordered the hustler, it just came in friday. My bad.

391198 are the only numbers on the old prop other than its size. maybe that means something to someone?

I think I have figured out whats wrong with the hustler. When veiwed from the front it seems the hub kit doesnt line up, as if the prop is out of round.
