1974 21' Supersport Rebuild

Been a long time lurker. Love these forums, lots of awesome information here. Last year I rebuilt a 17 foot Blue Fin tinny but it got small real fast. So in January I found this 21' Starcraft SS, total rebuild needed. So far I have it flipped and paint stripped off, trailer is painted and ready for bunk carpet. Just about ready for boat paint, will try to post more pictures later today. Was curious about motor on this, its a '74 Johnson 115. I know it may be a bit small for this boat as its rated for a 195 but previous owner said he pulled 2 skiers with it with no problem. What do you guys think?

Welcome eck:welcome:, Looks like a real nice big big project. You do realize if you get two foot itis now, your going to need a biger tow vehicle.

Yes it is a big big project. I was actually looking for one a little smaller. 18' to 20' but in Kansas these old Starcrafts are hard to come by. Here's some more pictures.

Welcome. Really great hull you got there! It will actually do surprisingly well with the 115. My buddy has a 21 or 22' Chieftain with a 90 on it. It's slow (only like a 25 MPH top speed) but it planes quite quickly and nicely.

ez that's good to know. our old boat did 34mph with a force 90. we were happy with that so it we should be fairly happy with this.

Does anyone know where to find starcraft decals and johnson decals. If the weather permits I will try to paint this weekend, I will be ready for them pretty quick

You could also wait till jasoutside comes back from his gave-up-the-internet-for-lent hiatus and contact him. He has a guy that made him some custom decals for a number of different things (boats and motor) that were fantastic and very reasonable.

The 115's are strong motors, and they are very decent on the 18 footers. I was out yesterday on one, but didn't check the speed on GPS. If it were mine, I would bolt on no less than a 150. (Unless gas usage is a big concern.)

Spent the day finishing sanding on bottom of boat. Hopefully we can shoot the bottom 2/3 this weekend.

Then flip her back over and back onto trailer. Want to get floor back in and prepped for painting the topside. All the floatation foam in it was the white styrofoam. Some was water logged but most is dry. Is there any reason not to put it back in? Figured I could use it and fill the rest up with pool noodles.

Another thing is I have about 20 sheets of exterior grade 1/2" ply, thinking about doubling it up in traffic areas to add strength. Any thing wrong with my thinking on that? Should I just go buy 3/4"?

Personally I would stick with single 1/2" and if you feel that it's too "springy" you can add structural support under the deck (for example, running aluminum angle from the stringer to the center supports).

Then you get the best of both worlds, weight and strength...plus, your windshield and consoles/windshield will fit better.

I used 3/4" in a 16' and because of the additional weight, it's one of my few regrets.

remember that you can also add glass cloth to the epoxy on 1/2" and end up with nearly the stiffness of 3/4". one of our crowd (North Beach) did this and his came out great.

What an awesome looking hull you have.

1/2" for the deck should be sufficient. Like others said you can add some supports underneath. Thats my plan for my SS.

Not a boat guru by any means, but that huge transom would look awesome with a pair of 90s or 100s hanging on the back of it in my opinion.

My pics all disappeared in my thread, but that is what I did, 1/2" ply floor with another 1/2" laminated underneith in between the sringers and under the seating. It's very strong feeling now.

That is what i was thinking of doing. I just don't want to regret either decision i make. Never have worked with cloth and epoxy, will look into that. Thanks guys

OK been getting a few things done. Bottom of boat is painted and trailer is ready to go. Weather has been nasty the last couple of days but I am ready to put her back on the trailer. Got a little sanding to do on the topside then ready to paint blue on the consoles and topsides. Here's a couple progress pictures.


The transom has a long horizontal crack in it from a bad transom. PO tried welding it but it didn't hold. I found a piece of 1/4 inch aluminum diamond plate that i plan to bolt onto the back. Thinking I will sandwich a bunch of 5200 and hope it seals her up good.



Is the 5200 going to work to seal up my transom?
