Good day,

Have a 25 hp Johnson Model 25E74M, serial number C47280. It is mounted on a 14 foot aluminum fishing boat, be mid 70's or so Springbok, not a heavy boat by any stretch of the imagination.

Motor runs great at idle and when under power but it has no power at WOT. I attached a Tiny Tach and tried the boat out yesterday in 2 foot waves. With 3 of us in the boat totalling roughly 550 lbs, I could only get a maximum of 1850 RPM at WOT. Motor is running fine, not missing or anything but does seem to burn a lot of fuel, used 2.5 gals in 2.5 hours of trolling. Did a compression test with two different guages. First one gave a reading of 65 lbs on the top cylinder but unfortunately I cannot get the guage into the bottom cylinder as the screw in piece is too long to get in past the bottom shroud. I tried the other tester and it gave me a reading of 100 lbs in the top and 105 in the bottom. That seemed better. I then restarted the motor and let it run for 10 minutes more, and rechecked compression and both cylinders read 85 lbs. Not sure why they would go down.

I have noticed on the engine that the bottom coil is loose in its mounting bracket, the bracket is tight to the engine block but the plastic coil does move noticiably where as the top coil is tight and does not move.

Other than that the engine is in tip top shape I belive, so what could be causing the lack of RPM at WOT? Could it be the engine is getting too much fuel? I am going to get a guage to check the fuel pump pressure. The boat will sometimes run at WOT with just me in the boat on a calm day, but get it in some waves and it will power out.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I apologize for the long post but trying to give as much info as possible.
