1974 40 hp Merc impeller blade rotation?

Is there any special direction the impeller blades are supposed to rotate or face in the water pump housing? I had to grind my old one off the shaft, and in my enthusiasm, i did not pay attention to which way what was left of the blades were going. I now have the blades going counterclockwise. Looking at it from the top, the impeller turns clockwise..

That means the vanes will curve to the left.

Impellor blades will self correct if they are reversed as soon as you start the motor with water in the pump.

xmen 3. How do you know they will self correct? I have always wondered about that but to get the blade on the short radius to turn around would take some work.......thinking........but when all the blades rotate through the large radius there I suppose they could correct especially with help from ram water from running the boat at a reasonable speed.
