I have a 40 hp Johnson Model# 40EL-74S, it runs great but will not charge back the battery. I looked to see if there was a stator but it is listed that it does not have one. Am I missing something simple?

Get your model number and go here: http://epc.brp.com/SiteMods/BRP_Public/BRP_Public_Login.aspx?ReturnUrl=/Index.aspx
Search for your exact model and look at the magneto section. If there's no charge coil under the flywheel, no charge for battery. I've heard folks using a small solar charge panel to maintain battery between uses. I have a '65 w/no generator (no charge coils back then), and my deep cycle seems to last forever, as it starts w/bump of the key, and I replaced running/interior lights w/LED..

Assuming it is electric start, it does have battery charging coils under the flywheel. It also has a 3 phase rectifier on the port side, attached to the bypass cover. Test the rectifier. It is way more likely to be the problem than the coils.

According to your model#, you should have a charging system on it.
