I have a 1974 50 hp johnson non-tiller type controls.
When i turn the key to the off position nothing happens and the motor keep running, also the auto choke does not work ether.
Last year i replaced the ignition switch trying to fix this with no result.
Any ideas?
Thanks

purple white wire is the choke, black yellow wire is the kill. you have something wired wrong.

...or some corrosion at a connection. A broken wire can cause this too. But check your wiring first as suggested. The ignition gets grounded out when the key is moved to "off" - it actually doesn't turn the power to the ignition off.

My Suzy cable came unplugged once- I uncharacteristically froze for two seconds almost hitting the dock while my mind tried to comprehend that the motor didn't shut down! I recovered and got it in neutral. It was funny afterwards but for safety's sake I have always moved to neutral to stop propulsion since. I am not really sure why I used the key swith that day instead of the selector.
