1974 should have a control box with the wiring harness with the Big Red connecting plug at the motor. what makes you think the controls are bad, may just need new cables. as to whether the motor is worth repairing, you gave us nothing to go on. have you price an new 50hp? if it is running, that is a plus right there.

tashasdaddy, thanks for the reply. Yes i have the big red plug..I took apart the CB and where the for/rev cables run through a tensioner or something. Theres is a black plastic piece that clicks into the handle which looks like brass knuckles, one of the knuckles was broke off, i will post a picture tomorrow. Do they have a schematic or parts catalog on them, i can find anything. I plan on doing the cables, but thought if i had to buy a new CB why waste the extra cash.
we tested the motor last night and had good compress #1-160 #2- 155
jusy hope the lower unit works cant really tell until i can get the control box working properly. to ingage the gears. I got the propeller to spin in forward but couldnt get reverse.
