1974 59 hp with the selectronic control maybe seized

I bought a 1960 Owens the previous owner installed a 1974 evinrude on it.
The engine is a 50 hp evinrude with the select shift. According to him the last time he used it was 8 y ago and ran good. Unfortunately he did not winterized it. I took the cover of and attempted to turn the flywheel and not moving an inch. I am not sure if it needs a battery because of the select shift to be able to engage in neutral. Not very familiar with these engine.
Any info will be greatly appreciated.

Found out it is 89273c which makes it a 1972 50 hp.

No, you would not need a battery to simply turn it over by hand. Could be stuck in the lower unit, could be stuck in the powerhead. Won't know until you do some digging. Maybe pull the spark plugs and take a look-see. Drain the lower unit oil and see what comes out. If you drop the lower unit off to check it out, tie a string to the two wires to aid in feeding them back through later. A service manual is a must if you wish to dig further...

Would it help if I remove spark plugs snf dpray cylinders with wd-40?

Try some ATF mixed with Acetone 50:50. Forget the wd-40.

Have you determined if it's the lower unit or powerhead?

I have not have the chance to do it. Came to the conclusion that 1st I need a battery to engage the selectric drive in Neutral. I removed the spark plugs put a light inside the cylinders and all look good no rust just carbon.

If it is a 1972 50hp it automatically goes to forward gear when there is no current to the gear case.

That is probably why I can not turn the flywheel. In the next day or so I will hook up a battery and see what will happen. I am looking for a manual for this engine. Does anyone know which manual will cover this particular engine?

Whether in forward or neutral, you should still be able to turn the flywheel over by hand. Step one is still to determine if it's the lower unit or the powerhead causing the issue...

Google Ken Cook Marine Manuals and buy the shop manual for that year and model
