ok found out today that my choke solenoid never completely turns off
the solenoid gets pretty hot
looking in my shop service manual i see that its controlled by the choke switch and a thermo sensor in the lower left corner of the clyinder head

i think the termo switch my be bad
the choke switch works perfect

is there any way to bypass the termo switch and just have the coke switch working

thanks Bob

Are you sure the switch in the cylinder head is for the choke or is it a temp sender for an overheat alarm?
By looking at a parts breakdown the only sensor I see is for the overheat alarm.

the over heat alarm is located in the top right by the t sat
this motor has a sensor also located in the bottom left of the head
its part# 0384088 look on the cylinder and crankcase parts page

Most of the automatic chokes were rewired and the automatic chokes disabled subject to a service bulletin issued in 1974. In some cases they were rewired by those unaware of the problems.

If there were ever an understated problem, this was it; after this none of the newer motors had this feature.
