1974 9.9 question

I'm about to change out the impeller on a friend's Johnson 9.9 (mod. 10R74G), and find I don't have a parts or service manual to cover this one. Can anybody tell me where the connection is for the shift rod on this model?

While I'm at it, it looks like the tell-tale on this one is kind of unique -- either that or there is another problem. The water exits the block at the bottom rear of the water jacket cover, then runs down the bottom of the pan to a hole on the starboard side where it runs out. I suppose that could be as OMC intended, but seems kind of crazy. Can anybody confirm whether this is a feature?

Thanks.

Re: 1974 9.9 question

oldboat, when you split the lower unit from the midsection, you will see the shift rod connector. Take the top bolt out to release the shift rod. It'll help to put the shift in forward for removal. To reinstall, pull up on the lower shift rod and put the shift lever in forward. This will give you room between the lower unit and midsection to get the shift rod connector bolt in.

The tell tale is normal. Thats where they were put.

Re: 1974 9.9 question

I have a 1975 and am working in that area now. OBJ has nailed the disconnect of the shift rod.

Make sure that you clean out all of the crud that you can get to when you open it up. Check here:

http://www.iboats.com/cgi-bin/ubb/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=28;t=027962

I plan to enlarge the lower drain hole as well and in the future I will blow it out from time to time with compressed air.

Mine does not have a tell-tale.

The tell tales really didn't come out till 77' on the 9.9/15's. Either the block or exhaust cover was changed or the exhaust cover was drilled and tapped for the tell tale.

Great idea to enlarge the drain hole also. Don't hurt anything and gives large stuff a chance to get out.

Re: 1974 9.9 question

Hey -- all excellent responses (and links), and I appreciate it. It came apart uneventfully. Probably more importantly, it went together fairly uneventfully. I'll need to try it out tomorrow to make sure it's pumping OK, shift rod linkage didn't slip, etc.

I think there is probably a leak at the very bottom of the exhaust cover gasket, and will need to explore that. Naturally, the fuel hose blocks access and I can't see under there without removing the hose. And I'll be curious to see if somebody did drill it with the idea of creating a tell-tale.

All great stuff. Thanks folks.

Curt (Oldboat1)

Oldboat - 3 yrs ago you posted about a Chrysler 10hp 100HA. I just got one - check my other post. I'm looking for piston rings for mine - pistons seem ok and still very tight fit in powerhead. Would greatly appreciate your advice - pls reply as thread to my post about my engine. Thanks!
