No problem with posting everything here. Just understand that if you have some engine/drive questions along the way, that this isn't the best place to get answers to those.

Nice project, good luck with it.

Thanks ezmobee, I will do, if i have any questions along the way I will ask. :D

This project is the first of I hope many. I do not have a good videography skill, nor explanitory skill but i will try my best to show you all the process as it is being done.

Re: 1974 Bayliner Discovery 1850 Restore

So i decided to go to NAPA (auto parts store) and buy a Pinstripe Remover tool.
Upon going in the store, it turns out the tool is a 2 piece. the Wheel itself and the Pnuematic tool. The gentleman tried to sell me the tool but failed because i told him i didnt have any air source.
So i brought home the pin stripe remover wheel, put it in my drill and took at whack at the Bayliner logo, mind you the Bayliner is a 1974 so 39 year old sticker? (dont know if my math is correct) it came off like a dream. I made a little video but here are some pictures of the process.
I made this tutorial video for aeilers but i got the Idea from SKIBUM1M i believe is his name, he did a Larson All american 150 that he painted yellow. He used this tool and wheel combo, but just the wheel worked for me.

vlad,

Those erasers are cool tools. Nice job!

Your gelcoat does not look all that bad. You Might be able to wet sand and buff it out. Might be worth a shot. Where you just removed the decal start with some 400 grit and work your way up to 1000 grit and see if the decal outlines go away. If so you might not have to paint her. My 50 yr old gel was gone but yours kinda looks like it might be salvagable. I think I'd give it a try.

Hey woodonglass,
Thanks for the advice, i will take it into consideration when i am prepping the boat for paint, my brother is an automotive painter by trade and he is offereing me free labor as long as i pick up materials. We picked out a very cool design, i dont wanna post it or show it to anyone just not to jinx it. so it is something you all will have to wait and see :) thanks for the advice though....
keep checkin in... i just ran into big problem today... im sure you all know what it is... you guessed it.... Time for stringer and floor replacement... heck lets do the transom too! editing the video now. please be patient

Re: 1974 Bayliner Discovery 1850 Restore

So i took the leap and decided to purchase a double cut saw from Harbor Freight it cost around 80 bucks but since i cut my finger on a table saw like 6 years ago i have never come near another saw... until i found this one! it kicks butt!!! its a great little tool and definately a Necessity for someone removing thier old deck on the boat.
Here is the deal,

Previously i have cut about 5 drill holes (normal sized drills) around the boat and it seemed fine. so i figured *knock on wood* i have a good boat... only to come across @friscoboater video where he got the raw end of the deal on that boat (sorry man that sucked that it happened to someone like you) but in the video he said that the area in question was hard as rock.. it was only after he removed the fiberglass deck part he saw the rot! so i went to harbor freight and purchased a Hole saw for $5 dollars. also a great investment for me,
I went away drilling away
drilled 4 holes and hit water!!! DAM, but it was to be expected... earlier that day i was online looking at resin prices and such... so i kinda knew i had it coming.

116_firstholedrilled.jpg

117_secondholedrilled.jpg

so here it goes, today i bought the saw and started sawing! i cut a small square by the bilge and started taking some foam out... than decided that i will just get the rest of the floor out, THAN concentrate on the foam.

Re: 1974 Bayliner Discovery 1850 Restore

So i started cuttin some more, and i accidently kicked one of the corners up and it the layer of fiberglass that was on the deck wood just came up! so i lifted it up and up came the fiberglass on the deck :) almost all of it...
and what was beneath it?

138_gettingreadytoblastthroughit.jpg

of course, the PO just put down some cheap grade plywood, slapped some fiberglass probably from some autoparts store and painted it and called it good.

So when i pulled up the fiberglass part, i noticed the PO had his deck in 3 vertical sheets of ply instead of horizontal sheets of ply. so it was easy enough to pull up one board of ply. and thats all i did tonight, i will get a better start on it earlier tommarow. i get home from work around 2:00pm so i will go over there and my goal tommarow is to remove all wood, and to start rippin out foam.

Re: 1974 Bayliner Discovery 1850 Restore

vlad good deal on the boat and looks like you are making head way. The deck is old enough to have been replaced before, but if you do it right you should never have to do it again. There is lot's of good advice here too. I know with mine I was pissed as my deck was solid but I had wet foam underneath and the only way to get the foam out is ruin a good deck. But after the demo I was glad I did it because I was able to do everything over the way it should have been done from day 1. They cut alot of corners in places they can hide. Myself I am thinking most manufacturers do because there are alot of projects on here . Myself I feel the manufactuer never meant for the boat to be left out in the weather everday is why they built them the way they did. I actually found 34 holes left unsealed under the carpet that were put there to pour the foam in. I look at it this way you can buy a boat with good running gear and pay alot more . You seem to be able to do the mechanical work, so that will save you alot of money. I do all my own too. Some people will buy another boat for a donor boat and don't really know what they are getting into either unless they know what to check for. The way I look at it is fix up what you have , then you know what you have in the end. I was lucky I was able to run my powertrain for a season on the water, so I knew it was good and worth putting a restore into my boat. It does not matter which way you look at it we will all pay the same in the end to get the old girl on the water looking the way we want it. The fun work is just beginning but after the demolition is done and have it ready to go back together you will see some headway and start smiling when you get back at it because you can start to see what you have accomplished. Keep posting your findings, I like the pinstripe eraser and it will definitely help me. Good Luck

Jack

Oh you're in for it now with that foam! Looks like quite a job. You'll have this boat rebuilt better than it was from the factory when you're done though.

Re: 1974 Bayliner Discovery 1850 Restore

Thanks guy thats some motivation that i needed. I am at work now (Boeing) and I have 3 minutes before my shift, After work I am going to knock the rest of the floor out
My question to you guys is. How far back should i cut to the Wall of the hull? just so my saw doesnt go through the hull right? Than after that i can somehow remove it later after i get the foam out?
Thanks.

Myself I just left a couple inches..once you know the depth from your deck to hull you will be able to figure out how close you can go. Just leave enough for reference to deck height for your new one.

Re: 1974 Bayliner Discovery 1850 Restore

thank you, i will try that tonight. i will have more light after work, last night i got to it kind of late.

Now i have one more question from you iboats.com community.
I want to remove the rub rail so i can take the cap off. the rivets will not drill out (believe me i tried)
is it a good idea to run a SawsAll between the cap & rub rail to cut the rivets?

Re: 1974 Bayliner Discovery 1850 Restore

sorry mine was screwed together , but any rivet I ever drilled I used a larger bit ,that is bigger then the body of the rivet and drilled only the head off then pushed it through. Even if they turn it should gradually take the head off.

But after work she is going with her girlfriends so its gonna be me and the videos for some quality editing time.

Doncha just love all that foam!!!!!! Core sample the stringers and see if they are wet. You might luck out and not have to replace em. For your rub rail use a larger drill bit and just knock off the heads of the rivets OR use a sharp chisel to knock em off then use a punch to punch em out.

Re: 1974 Bayliner Discovery 1850 Restore

Yeah the foam is a pain... but with the shovel if you are careful you can pop out alot of chunks. the stringers are shot, but it looks as if they are 2x10 boards :) I am going to do something similar to Frisco Boaters Searay but none of that Peanut Butter stuff as it would waste alot of my supplies. I will probably just be doing PL, and tabbing. :) But that is later on. I need to concentrate on removing foam.
and chisel!!!
OMG... why didnt i think of that.. an effing chisel! haha thanks dude. i totally spaced on that one, im going to stop by harbor freight tools again today..
I already stopped buy earlier picked up 3 things
-Garbage Bags to hold the foam temporarily until i get it all out, than do a dump run.
-Scraper tool
-and a product similar to Metal Rescue... at least it what it claims. I am going to test it on one of the engine parts that was rust. will include pics and video. and i will post it here :)

So keep posted guys I will be posting videos from the past two days also with some updates on stuff.

Hope you enjoy the progress. Thanks for all who helped me on figuring out a way to remove the cap

I did all this work in under 2 hours!! (it took a while for me to find a method but once i found a method of removing those stubborn rivets it took less than 40 minutes to completely lift cap off all by myself.. i am really impressed with myself. I will have the boat put together in no time.

Re: 1974 Bayliner Discovery 1850 Restore

I also tried a new product called Evapo Rust for removing rust ( i will need this for the engine rebuild i will derust the bolts and such.)
Great results. Left this in overnight. and BAM! no scrubbing what so ever... but i must say Evapo rust isnt cheap... Metal Rescue is much cheaper and same product. Watch thier videos online.
