Re: 1974 Bayliner Discovery 1850 Restore

I didn't mean to scare you, I was just frieking out cuz I don't know if I did it wrong and I screwed up my project. But yes I will need to build some sorta cradle... only problem is I'm on bark not solid cement ground... its unfortunately iall I have to work with... but I will have to think of something I guess. I really can't wait to begin grinding... only to get it over with... thank you for reply.

Steve, I cant wait to see your threads. I am getting resin from a place called Fiberglass mart in everett on highway 99. His pricing for CSM is decent but its also comparable to TAP Plastics in Lynnwood WA. They may have a location near you check them out on google. but tap plastic also has some resin i believe for cheaper? or close to that, but thier stuff is General Purpose for that price so i would rather go with stuff thats marine grade... I dont know the difference but knowing that working on my boat i have learned that to make the boat safe... marine isnt just a word in front of an automotive product. For instance Starters... i have looked on ebay and found these awesome starters for 90 bucks... with oem ones for 150-250 ... but from what i have read on peoples forums those units will take 25-50 cranks and just poof no more... so just a little rant on my behalf :)
i am not saying that all ebay items dont work, i am only giving you my knowledge as far as what i have been reading on these forums.
good luck if you need exact directions PM me i will send em your way.

Ok thanks for the info, I get up in that area two to three times a month to see family so I'll look them up. I need to take more pic of my project so I can start a thread. I've been reading through Frisco's thread and OOp's also and I'am very excited to start mine .

Oh yes those two are very helpful with pictures. Also a few people to get to know are DON S. he is mainly a Volvo Engine type guy i think but since i have a volvo engine he has been very helpful and woodonglass also has lots of knowledge as do alot of people on here. I wish i knew about iboats.com before i started my project. But hey good luck Also call them ahead of time because they close at like 5pm it is a small family owned little shop thing so he doesnt really try to upsell or anything. nice guy.

Re: 1974 Bayliner Discovery 1850 Restore

To all who have been patiently watching my thread... sorry for long time without updates but good news is on the way... as of yesterday boeing passed a contract extension with the union and they are giving us bonuses. With this bonus I will completely pay off all my debt and by the 16th I will be purchasing all parts and stuff I need to complete my engine. All is good the engine just needs to be put together, and the exhaust manifold is going to be sent out for jethot ceramic heat application!! After that's complete the carb rebuild will begin, with that all I will be left to do is reseal the outdrive and we can finish the mechanical part of my boat... than in new years the purchasing of materials and grinding can commense! I'm so excited to get it started only to finish it quicker, we all know how much we love grinding. Thank you for all yourpatience, I will definatly be able to finish the boat before the date I need it done :) more to come soon as I am updating this via google phone and I'm getting carpel tunnel

Re: 1974 Bayliner Discovery 1850 Restore

yeah my date in my signature really has a big gap May-Sept. haha but its because i know after watching lots of people on here and it always just takes longer you never know. so I cant wait!! im excited because the block is at the machine shop right now getting hot tanked and done, so once it comes back i can order about 500 dollars worth of parts for it and send the exhaust manifold out for another 200... this 600 dollar motor that was "working fine" is costing me about 1200... but its ok i will be feeling better knowing i did it right putting it together

I'm still trying to figure out why you are getting the manifold ceramic coated.

The exhaust manifold should run cool enough to keep your hand on it while cruising. If you are on a tight budget delete that option.

Re: 1974 Bayliner Discovery 1850 Restore

the main reason being is for rust prevention, when i first pulled the manifold it was rusted together and what not, so i tried muriatic acid to get rid of rust, it helped a little but not really. this company is going to hot tank it, and blast it with some material than coat it with this stuff and it will be protected from rust and stay cool. they said they have gotten in rusty boat manifolds before and they turned out great, i dont know...

Re: 1974 Bayliner Discovery 1850 Restore

The lower end has been bombproof, I had my machine shop freshen up the head, hardened seats and new ex valves. I've owned the thing for about 8 years.

These things remind me of the old bugs, 15 minutes and the engine is sittin on the bench. I clear coated the cooling tubes after polishing and they stay shinney a lot longer.

Thanks for the compliment, I'm sure yours will turn out at least as nice.

Re: 1974 Bayliner Discovery 1850 Restore

So ladies and gents who have been following my little post... no i have not disappeared. I have just finished moving into my parents house to save some money and be closer to the boat (shh.. dont tell my wife) but now i litterally sleep about 10 feet from the outside of my window to the boat. lol.

First of all Happy New Year i hope all of your holidays were great, mine were!! Boeing Bonus helped out alot, and I have gotten some new tools that i will post pictures of :)

New 175psi 2 stage compressor :D
and i am currently cleaning out my dads garage to organize things before i get started putting the engine together.

I have all of the head gasket seals, and all of the correct seals needed, all of the stuff that needed to be machine has been machined... all i need to do is basically put it together.

Before that I will need to coat the Block with Automotive Rust Bullet, than coat it with engine enamel.
Than it will be fitted for bearings and everything will be lubed and assembled...

I am driving my Exhaust Manifold and Riser (elbow) to Performance Coatings in Auburn, WA tonight to coat it with special 1300+ degree ceramic coating, I chose this company because it is local and because i dont have to ship it to JetHot for 80 bucks each way... so for 200 i think it works out great!!

I cant wait to see the result.

Oh i also bought a Parts Washer and will be cleaning all the parts and blowing them off with the air from my new compressor i cant wait to set up all of the air lines ..

as you can all tell i am pretty excited...

after the engine is complete, and the exhaust manifold will go on the puppy and the carbs will be rebuilt (already have the kits for them) than all will be left to do is replace the impeller in the pump, get a new alternator and i will be happy as a goose!

Time is getting closer and its flying by, Since i put a hold on workin on the fiberglass of the boat, i will finish the Engine first, than it will be to blasting the Outdrive than painting the peices making it look brand new, than assembly... than i will start doing the finishing portion of my boat teardown (all i have left to do is rip the transom out ... there is some bad wood but most of it was good :( but i have decided i wanted to put in a brand new one all together). so once the new transom is in and the stringers and floor it will be time to test the transom and attache the engine and outdrive and from there i can figure out whats going on... once all of that is done, than leak test will begin... (probably going to do a leak test before i put the floor in.. with new stringers, and transom... still debating whether to just leave the transom whole and not cut the hole for the outdrive until after its in... that way i can float test the boat for a day (while spending it out on the beach with the wife) and if it has 0 leaks... i will than cut the transom... like i said still debating...

but it will all become evident as the time is getting closer....
but once all of that is done, the plan is to paint it last ..

QUESTION!!!

I am going to post this on the Engine forums unless Don Wants to chime in here since he is the Volvo Penta GURU....

On the Volvo AQ130D does it need a engine mount? when i pulled the old engine from my boat there was no mount of any kind, nor was there a mount post or holes in the bilge where a mount could screw to... please assist.

]None of the 130,s had front mounts. There is a cushion that fits in a boss in the flywheel cover and keeps the engine from spining and holds the height.

These are good parts diagrams to go by. Just select your engine

Great work so far! My Quartermaster 1950 appears to have the same hull design as yours. That said the transom is easy cheesy. I lamminated to pieces of 3/4 ply for the center section and the two outside pieces are just 1/2 ply. I would cut the hole first. It was just easeir that way. It also makes clamping easier. I made a cardboard template of it to help. I also did the same for the center section. And make sure too have more clamps than you think you will need.:)
