I have a 1974 Chrysler 35 hp with the model# 357HB. It came with the boat I bought and the guy said it quit pumping water. He said he didnt know until someone pointed it out on the lake, got it home and sure enough not pumping. He thinks its the impeller, if I pull the impeller out can I tell its bad by looking at it? The other question is could it be the water pump? I could not find on searching online.

Any Thoughts?

If you are going to the hastle of removing the lower unit and checking the impeller just spend the twenty bucks and put a new one in. If motor is fresh water the chances are pretty good the pump is okay. A week impeller may look good and still not pump water.

Ditto what eurolarva said. Pick a new impeller up and put it in. Most guys on here feel that it should be replaced every other year. Who knows how long the current one has been in your motor.

Its more time and effort, but it'd be cheap insurance to get a lower unit seal kit, and replace all the ones your motor came with.

Hey thanks everyone for the information, so I went and got the impeller and seal kit. I took out the for bolts connecting the lower unit but can't pull the lower unit off. What am I missing, a rod, or a pin or what? I dont want to pull to hard and damage something. I have a manual for the motor but I'm not sure what lower unit out of the A,B,C, or D that are explained. What do you guys think?

It's your shift rod that's hanging you up. Look on the front of the mid leg just behind the transom clamp and you will see the shift rod. It has a long turnbuckle nut and a lock nut. Loosen the lock nut and then undo the turnbuckle nut and the lower unit will drop right off.

Thanks, I'm going to give a go tomorrow, the wife made plans to go out tonight so the project is postponed. One more thing, does the motor have to be in neutral or forward, or it dosent matter?

SO I got the lower unit off and I noticed the waterpump housing is broke right where one of the bolts goes through, but I can't seem to find a replacement for the 35hp 1974 model. Does anyone know where I can get this part? This must be why it wasn't pumpiong water through. Any thoughts?

Re: 1974 Chrysler 35 hp

My 35 HP Chrysler 1968-73 model possibly has not had its impeller replaced but checked about 1986 and looked and worked good or replaced then.

1. It works good now ?in my opinion?. What is the avg. hour life? What would dictate the average life?

2. I have averaged 5-8 hours of very light fishing use a year since 1985 (short trolling trips due to stumps).

3. What would cause the impeller to fail if the rubber is good? I replaced propeller shaft seal 7/09, oil leak and no water in oil.

4. Any specific winterizing the pump? Does it drain completely and automatically if the motor is down?

5. I have a service/repair manual on CD coming but I serviced from a paper back manual when I serviced better 80 & 90s?

6. Too Late but do you find the CD to be as good as the paper manuals? Sharing w/o scanning should work?

7. My pump?s concern and attachment was on page 5 with an attachment showing the stream.

Should a 35 HP Chrysler's water pump discharge be solid or a mixed?

On the 35 HP Chrysler 1971 or 73 model, Mod. # 3555, Ser. # 2365.

1. Should the water pump?s discharge be solid or a mixed out-put (in such a large dia)? Hopefully, you can observe the out-put approximately just above idle in the attachments.

2. Should the impeller be checked periodically if the out-put looks OK?

3. The cover is off a 55 HP vs this 35 HP. What year is the 35 HP model?

Please excuse me skipping around but I thought all was related info.

Thanks,
Joe

My Questions/Concerns:

1. If the gear-shift-rod is disconnected at the cotter pin vs adjusting linkage (on the 1970 35HP Chrysler), readjusting the forward, neutral and reverse should not be necessary, Right?

2. It was tight but I was able to disconnect in a small leg opening after disconnecting some linkage at the motor (attached).

3. Was this the best option or was there another way to get to the cotter pin?

4. Maintaining the boat, motor, trailer and etc (off-season) and working firewood over the years has always seemed strange and ?old now?, But Fun!

Thanks for comments in advance.
