1974 Envinrude water pump

Hello People,
Got a question for you. I got an old 50 HP Evinrude Outboard, 1974 Model #50473M. I look in the seloc manual on how to change the water pump... The manual is so general I can not specify which model I have. How do you get the foot off to change the water pump. From what it looks like in the manual, you must remove the power head to get to the gear linkage to disconnect it. Is that right? Is that the only way to change that pump?
Please help, not really wanting to have to do all that.

Does the lower unit have an inspection plate that can be removed? If so, this is where you disconnect the shift linkage.

Can you elaborate? What is an inspection plate and where would it be located?
