Hi Guys, I picked up a sweet deal on a 14' Starcraft motor and trailer for $200.00, Had the muffs on and ran motor till I noticed no water and it was getting hot. I dropped the lower unit and the impeller is great and in the right direction. My question is ...does this motor have a thermostat??? Or does it need to be in a barrel when running? 1974Evenrude Norseman serial #40454S

When running on the muffs, the impeller isnt even used as your hose is supplying the pressure. There must be a restriction in the cooling circuit.

Hello Neighbour, Your in Hamilton cool. Hey wouldn't the impeller still turn on the shaft drawing the water up?

Yes it would definately still turn, but you really wouldnt need it in to cool the motor with the hose cooling the motor. In a barrel, or on the lake, the impeller does all the work.

What motor are we talking about here? What is the model number or hp?

Hope you're not testing today, was raining and I had to halt motor tests myself. Seems to have stopped now, so can get back to work. ;)

The serial # is 40454S I know it's a 74 Norseman 40 hp. Some one posted that the older motors sometimes won't run on the muffs? I can't find the thread again.

Depends what type of muffs you have, if just the universal type no they wont fit properly. There was a special muff made for that motor that fits the water intake properly. Short of that, it must be run in a water barrel. If you do not have one you could bring it over to my house and I could check it out for you in my test tank. Rainbarrel.ca, at the corner of Mud and 20 sells test barrels with a spout on the bottom for draining for pretty cheap, think I bought one for around $20

If you do end up needing help with it PM your number and Ill have a peek at it.

Ok, I'll try the barrel test with an old garbage pail, In the end I'll put an axe to it to drain the water LOL. Hey thanks for your help. Do you own a repair shop? I don't have much free time as I work for CAMI in ingersol 6 days aweek manditory overtime. No time for fishing. :(
