Hello. . . .

I have a 1974 Evinrude 115, Model 115493-B Serial J0005126, and need to change the impeller out, but I I am not sure how / where to release the shift linkage to do the repair.

I know it is a simple as removing the lower unit bolts, and releaseing the shift linkage, but not sure on this motor exactly, so I would greatly appreciate any advice I could get.

I am doing this for a friend, so I don't have the manual for the motor.

If possible could someone tell me the part # for just the impeller - as well as the # for a whole impeller kit in the event we need that.

Thanks in advance for your assisteance / Knowledge

Have a Great Day !!!

From the starboard side, running under the carburetors, there is a lever like device called a bellcrank. It has two parallel fingers with a screw in the center. You need to remove the screw and spread the fingers at the shift rod end. This will release the shift rod.

It is easier if you pull a cloth under the carbs so that if you drop the bolt you can retrieve it. It may be necessary to move the control cables as well. A lot of guys pull the carburetors off to get to this, but it can be done without removing them, it is just tedious.

When you take the gearcase off, try to leave the swivel at the top of the shift rod as it is.

The OEM # 385528 is superseded by part # 777212. The Sierra part #, sold by iboats, is 18-3043.

The previous numbers are impeller only.

The complete kit was 386124, now superseded by 439140. The Sierra kit does not come with the housing, so the OEM kit is a better choice of the two.

HA HA . . . . Sounds about right . . . .

Well I got a little free time today, and tore into it. The impeller was trashed, and all the fins where busted off, but the plate and housing all looked good.

I found a complete kit for $25 to the door priority shipping, and he said he would ship it tomorrow, so I will check the local parts dealer, but I would imagine online will be cheaper as the local shop is the only OMC parts dealer in town, and he is really an ***. I want to get it back together asap, but I won't pay 2-3 times the online price, so in that event I can wait 4-5 days :)

The job was easy after the advice THANKS AGAIN

I did notice the exhaust gasket could stand to be repaired, you wouldn't happen to know the part # for that would you, as i don't want to get the wrong one.

Thansk again for all the priceless advice !!

Re: 1974 Evinrude 115 Impeller replacment 115493-B

Hello. . . . .
I bought the sierra kit online for $25 to the door, so it should be here in a couple days.

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&viewitem=&item=320102487362

I was curious if the new impeller should be lubbed prior to installation, or is the reason the other one went to pieces is because it got stuck sitting for a long time ??

Any suggestions for reinstall, just so I do it all right ??

Thansk for the help !!!

The exhaust seal is #314937. Tape it on or use some gasket sealer so it doesn't slip when you put the gearcase back.

You want that seal to be tight, so it is worth replacing. There are no aftermarket ones, so you will probably want to get that locally. It should run around $12. to $13., no matter where you get it.

Be sure to check your gear oil while you have the gearcase off. If it is leaking, this is the ideal time to get it fixed.

BTW, you can look up almost any part diagram for OMC models after 1968 at the BRP parts catalogs site: http://epc.brp.com/default.aspx?brands=ej&lang=e

You can also locate parts dealers by picking the third selection and then entering your zip code here: http://dealerlocator.evinrude.com/EN/?Rnd=1179172143422

If you are going to be running the motor right away, some gear oil or engine oil probably will do no harm, but I think that oil on rubber is generally destructive.

If you put marine grease like Triple Guard on the driveshaft before you mount the impeller, it will make it a lot easier the next time it has to be removed.

It is very important to lightly grease the splines at the top of the driveshaft, preferably with Moly Lube. It is equally important to replace the o-ring at the top of the drive shaft.

If you clean and grease the shift rod where it enters the gearcase, It will reduce the wear on the seal.
