Before putting my small pontoon boat away this fall, I noticed while I was driving it full out, it suddenly dropped out of forward gear and which sent the engine reving wildly. I quickly lowered the throttle cable and figured maybe the throttle cable had loosened somewhat. I checked and adjusted the cable and retried only to have it happen again. I took off the external throttle cable and manually put it in gear, but it again would pop out of forward gear. It didn't slip out of gear immediately, but after about 5 seconds of moving forward. In order to get back to shore, I had to hold the gear lever on the engine in forward until I reached our dock. It functioned as long as I held the gear shift forward.
Could there be something worn or broken inside the lower unit or does the gear rod inside the motor simply need to be adjusted. I've had this motor for 5 years with no issues.
