Before putting my small pontoon boat away this fall, I noticed while I was driving it full out, it suddenly dropped out of forward gear and which sent the engine reving wildly. I quickly lowered the throttle cable and figured maybe the throttle cable had loosened somewhat. I checked and adjusted the cable and retried only to have it happen again. I took off the external throttle cable and manually put it in gear, but it again would pop out of forward gear. It didn't slip out of gear immediately, but after about 5 seconds of moving forward. In order to get back to shore, I had to hold the gear lever on the engine in forward until I reached our dock. It functioned as long as I held the gear shift forward.

Could there be something worn or broken inside the lower unit or does the gear rod inside the motor simply need to be adjusted. I've had this motor for 5 years with no issues.

Usual culprit is the clutch dog, which resides inside the lower unit. It slides on the prop shaft to engage either forward or reverse gear.

When I was a kid we had a 7.5 Johnson that developed the same problem. Not to be discouraged I just rigged up a piece of wire to hold it in forward, ran it for years like that. That's not necessarily the "right" way to handle the problem, but it worked for a kid that needed his boat.

Have you sorted out this problem?

I have had a similar thing happen with a Johnson 40 HP but it's the gear lever and linkages going through the motor housing that is the problem...

Get your part numbers for the clutch dog and the forward gear,If the dog is bad most likly the gear is also,Then keep checking ebay for your gears, you will find them, it may take time but you'll get then 1/4th the price of a dealer. They probably cost from a dealer between 3 and 4 hundred.Good luck
