1974 Evinrude 85 HP cooling problems

I have a 1974 Evinrude 85 that buzzed because of overheating so I shut it down. Replaced the water pump in 2019 but have never replaced the Vernatherm Valve which I believe is the thermostat. I am trying to diagnose if it is the water pump, the Vernatherm Valve or both. I thought if I could see water coming out of the sight tube, I may be able to concentrate on the Vernatherm valve.

Can someone tell me where the sight tube is?
Also, if someone could recommend a good place to buy aftermarket replacement parts?

I do not believe there is a tell tale pisser on a 74 model.----Over heated ?----Post results of a compression test.
